Son las cuatro de la tarde en Madrid. El termómetro en las calles marca 40°C. El hecho de que no sólo nosotros sufrimos por el extenuante calor nos demuestra la conversación telefónica con el padre de Luis Miguel, Luis Rey. "Mucho calor para trabajo", nos dice en su español-inglés masticado. "Viene a eso de las ocho a Las Matas". Así se llama el lugar exclusivo con Cancha de Golf, a 20 km de Madrid. En este expansivo complejo está la Residencia de verano de la familia. Dos uniformados en la entrada sólo dejan pasar a las visitas anunciadas. La Villa de 10 habitaciones de Gallego Basteris (el nombre de la familia de Luis) está sobre una colina, adonde detrás de otra verja se llega a una calle asfaltada. La inmensa construcción de piedra con balcones, miradores y torreones y muy pocas, en relación, pequeñas ventanas hacen recordar a una fortaleza. Luis Miguel tiene sólo 2 semanas para pasar vacaciones en Las Matas. Luego regresa a su verdadero domicilio. "En el Boeing 747", bromea él. Ya que en los aviones y cuartos de hoteles transcurrió él la mayor parte de los últimos 5 años. Desde que cumplió 10 años, Micky (de Miguel = Michael) no ha visitado ninguna escuela normal. Profesores privados le imparten las clases. Durante las vacaciones está al menos sólo su profesora de inglés presente, Rebecca, joven, bonita, de cabello oscuro, viene como él de México. Con sus padres habla él español e italiano. El padre, Luis, es español, la madre, Marcela, es italiana. Algo especial para Micky son las vacaciones de verano en España, más aún porque es la única oportunidad del año en donde puede estar con chicos de su edad. Con Alejandro su mejor amigo de Madrid pasa el día y noche. En el terreno de 16000 qm hay de todo. Piscina con Resbaladera, Cancha de Tennis, Salón de Squash en el sótano. Dos empleadas de servicio realizan diversos quehaceres. La mayoría de las diez habitaciones muestran un museo bien surtido. Hay un ostentoso comedor de la era napoleónica, estatuas de oro, un gramófono de 1908, vasos chinos y figuras en una vitrina de vidrio iluminada. Sólo la habitación de Micky parece la de un quinceañero - si no fuera por los trofeos de oro y plata en un armario blanco. Y sino se aprecia un caos de ropa y revistas cómicas españolas. La habitación tiene el color preferido de Micky: rojo. "Rojo fuego va conmigo, con mi tempe- ramento". Alfombra roja, paredes rojas con una figura de Sombrero mexicano. It's 4 in the afternoon in Madrid. The thermometer in the street says 40 C (110 F). The fact that not only we are suffering
through the debilitating heat is demonstrated by the telephone conversation with Luis Miguel's father, Luis Rey. "It's too hot
to work," he tells us in his chewed-over Spanish-English. "Come at 8 to Las Matas."
That's the name of the exclusive place with a golf course, 20 km from Madrid. In this expansive complex is the summer residence of the family. Two uniformed guards at the entrance only let announced visitors enter. The 10-room villa of the Gallego Basterys (Luis's family name) is on top of a hill, where behind another railing one arrives at an asphalt street. The immense stone construction with balconies, enclosed terraces, towers. and relatively very few, small windows, brings to mind a fortress. Luis Miguel has only two weeks to spend his vacations in Las Matas. Then he'll return to his true home. "In a Boeing 747," he jokes, because it is in airplanes and hotel rooms where he has spent the majority of the last five years. Since he turned 10 years old, Micky (from Miguel=Michael) has not had any normal schooling. Private teachers give him classes. During vacations at least only one of his English teachers is present: Rebecca, young, pretty, with dark hair and like Micky she comes from Mexico. With his parents he speaks Spanish and Italian. Luis's father is Spanish, his mother, Marcela, is Italian. The summer vacations in Spain are special for Micky, more still because it's the only chance during the year when he can be with boys his age. He spends day and night with Alejandro, his best friend from Madrid. On the extensive grounds there is everything: tennis courts, squash courts. Two employees do diverse chores. Most of the 10 rooms appear like a well-stocked museum. There is an ostentatious dining-room from the Napoleon era, gold statues, a record player from 1908, china vases and figurines in an illuminated glass showcase. Only Micky's room seems like that of a 15-year-old--if it weren't for the gold and silver trophies in a white cabinet. However, one notices the chaos of clothes and Spanish comic books. The room is Micky's preferred color: red. "Fire red goes with me, with my temperament." Red carpet, red walls with a figure of a Mexican sombrero.
